Galaxy S22 Ultra Screen Replacement

On the Galaxy S22 Ultra we only sell the screen already fitted in a new frame. Samsung bonds the curved screen to the frame, and trying to separate them usually breaks the new one. Instead, everything inside your phone moves over to the new frame.

Tools

  • Phillips screwdriver #00
  • SIM eject tool
  • Heat pad, iOpener or heat gun on low
  • Suction cup and thin plastic opening picks
  • Nylon spudger and ESD-safe tweezers
  • Isopropyl alcohol (90%+) and lint-free wipes
  • A thin plastic card (never metal) for lifting the battery
  • Clamps or a screen press
  • Safety glasses, and a metal can of sand for the old battery

Parts

  • Galaxy S22 Ultra screen with frame in your color
  • New Galaxy S22 Ultra battery (recommended, because the old one usually bends coming out)
  • Back glass adhesive
Advanced repair. Keep every screw in order on a magnetic mat; a long screw in the wrong hole can damage the logic board.
Before you start: run the battery down below 25%. Less charge means much less stored energy if the cell is damaged. If the battery is swollen, dented or punctured at any point, stop and bring the phone to a shop.
Fingerprint: After the repair, register your fingerprint again. Some aftermarket and refurbished screens don’t support the under-screen fingerprint reader; face unlock and PIN still work.

Open the back

  1. Power off and remove the SIM tray and S Pen

Power off the phone and pull the SIM tray, then push the S Pen in and pull it out of its slot. Samsung back glass is thin and bonds hard, so cover it with packing tape if it’s cracked.

  2. Heat the back glass

Warm the edges of the back glass evenly for 3–5 minutes. Samsung uses stronger adhesive than Apple, so expect to reheat a couple of times. Keep the heat moving and away from the camera lenses.

  3. Cut the back glass adhesive

Lift near the bottom edge with a suction cup just enough for a hairline gap, slide a pick in and work it around all four sides, leaving picks in the gap so the adhesive doesn’t reseal. Keep the pick shallow at the top near the cameras.

There is no cable attached to the back glass on these phones, so once the adhesive is cut the glass lifts straight off.

Cut both long sides first, then slide the glass down slightly and cut the top.
  4. Remove the wireless charging cover

Remove the Phillips screws around the top plastic cover (it carries the wireless charging and NFC coil) and lift it off. Some models have a bottom cover over the speaker too; remove its screws and lift it off.

  5. Disconnect the battery

Unplug the battery cable first with the flat end of a spudger, before you touch any other cable. Then unplug the long main cable that crosses the battery and links the logic board to the charging port board.

Battery off first and back on last, so the phone stays dead while cables are moving. Schematic, not to scale.

Move everything to the new frame

  1. Lift out the boards and cameras

Unplug the display cable, the antenna cables and the camera cables from the logic board, remove its Phillips screws and lift the board out by its edges. Lift the rear cameras out of the frame. Then unplug and remove the charging port board at the bottom and the loudspeaker.

  2. Move the small parts

Move the vibration motor, the earpiece if it isn’t on the logic board, any rubber gaskets and the antenna cables over to the new frame. Check the new frame has its side buttons fitted; if it doesn’t, move the button cable across too.

  3. Soften the battery adhesive

The battery is glued to the frame with no pull tabs on most of these models. Drip isopropyl alcohol along the edges of the battery and let it soak in for a minute or two. If your battery does have pull tabs, use them instead.

  4. Lift the battery out

Starting from the bottom edge, slide a plastic card under the battery and lift slowly, adding alcohol as you go. Never use metal, never bend the cell, and stop if it swells, smokes or smells. Put the old battery straight into a metal can of sand.

  5. Fit a new battery in the new frame

A battery that has been pried out is often bent, so use a new one. Apply fresh adhesive and press the battery into the new frame.

Reassembly

  1. Rebuild in the new frame

Fit the charging port board, the loudspeaker, the logic board and the cameras into the new frame in the same order they came out. Reconnect every cable, then plug in the main cable and the battery last. Refit the covers and their screws.

  2. Test before you close

Power on and check the screen, touch, both cameras, the speakers, charging and the side buttons. Re-register your fingerprint in Settings.

  3. Close the back

Clean the back glass, lay new back glass adhesive, press the glass onto the new frame and clamp it for several minutes. Slide the S Pen and SIM tray back in.
