iPhone 8 Charge Port Replacement

This is an advanced repair on the iPhone 8: the screen and the parts at the bottom of the phone come out, and so does the logic board to reach the Lightning port. Before you start, clean lint out of the port with a wooden toothpick and try another cable; most charging problems aren’t the port.

Advanced repair. Keep every screw in order on a magnetic mat; a long screw in the wrong hole can damage the logic board.
Before you start: run the battery down below 25%. Less charge means much less stored energy if the cell is damaged. If the battery is swollen, dented or punctured at any point, stop and bring the phone to a shop.

Take it apart and replace the port

  1. Open the screen and disconnect the battery

Follow our screen guide to open the display, unplug the battery cable first, then the display cables, and set the display aside.

  2. Remove the speaker and Taptic Engine

Remove the screws from the bottom speaker and the Taptic Engine, unplug the Taptic Engine and lift both out. The battery can stay in place; it only needs to be disconnected.

  3. Lift out the logic board

On this model the Lightning cable runs under the logic board, so the board has to come out. Remove the rear camera, pull the SIM tray, unplug every cable and antenna on the board, remove its screws and lift it out by its edges. Take a photo first so every screw goes back in the same hole.

  4. Remove the port

Remove the screws on either side of the Lightning port and any small brackets over its cable, then peel the cable off the frame where it’s stuck down and lift the port assembly out. It includes the bottom microphones.

  5. Fit the new port

Set the new port in place and line it up with the opening (a Lightning cable plugged in from outside, not connected to power, helps). Press its cable onto the frame and reinstall the screws and brackets.

  6. Rebuild and test

Refit everything you removed, reconnect the cables with the battery last and close with fresh display adhesive. Test charging, data to a computer, both bottom microphones (record a voice memo and make a call) and the speaker.
