Removal
Power off and remove the bottom screws
Back up and power the phone off. Remove the two pentalobe screws on either side of the USB-C port. If the glass is cracked, cover it with packing tape first so it doesn’t flake and the suction cup can grip.
Bottom edge. One screw on each side of the port. Soften the adhesive
Warm the edges of the screen evenly for 2–3 minutes. The glass should feel hot but still comfortable to hold.
Cut the adhesive around the sides and top
Lift near the bottom edge with a suction cup, slide a pick in and cut along both long sides. Use a fresh, sharp pick or blade and keep it at a steep angle so you don’t slip under the panel.
Slide the display a millimeter or two toward the bottom of the phone to release the top clips, then cut across the top. Don’t lift the bottom edge more than about 5°.
Cut both long sides first, then slide the screen down slightly and cut the top. Open the display like a book
The display stays attached by short cables along one long edge, and that edge acts as the hinge. Lift the free edge and open it like a book. Open it and support it so the cables aren’t holding its weight. Don’t press on the back of the panel.
Disconnect the display
Remove the 2 tri-point screws, one from the display connector cover and one from the light sensor connector cover, and lift both covers off. Lift the display and light sensor cables straight up off their sockets, then remove the display.
Schematic layout. Unplug the cables only after both covers are off.
Reassembly
Clean the frame
Peel the old adhesive off the frame with tweezers, then wipe the edge with isopropyl alcohol. Only clean the outer edges of the display; alcohol elsewhere on the panel can cause image problems.
Inspect clips and springs
Check that the display clips stand straight up and the small grounding springs near the top aren’t bent.
Lay down the new adhesive
Peel the films from the new screen. Line the adhesive up with the frame using the camera cutouts as your guide, pull the bottom liner while pressing it down, and run a spudger around the edge two or three times.
Connect the new display
Hold the new display beside the phone in the open position and press each cable on evenly until it seats. Refit the covers and tri-point screws. Power on briefly to check picture and touch, then power off.
Close, press and test
Peel the remaining liners, check for loose screws, lower the display and press all four corners at once, then along the edges until it clicks flush. Clamp it for several minutes and reinstall the bottom screws. Test touch everywhere, Face ID, auto-brightness and the proximity sensor during a call.
Aftermarket screens show as an unknown part under Settings › General › About › Parts & Service History. That’s normal. With a genuine Apple display, run Repair Assistant from that menu.
