  • Pentalobe screwdriver P2
  • Tri-point screwdriver Y000
  • Heat pad, iOpener or heat gun on low
  • Suction cup and thin plastic opening picks
  • Nylon spudger and ESD-safe tweezers
  • Isopropyl alcohol (90%+) and lint-free wipes
  • Safety glasses and cut-resistant gloves if the glass is shattered
  • Clamps or a screen press

Parts

  • iPhone 17 back glass in your color
  • Back glass adhesive
Shattered glass: cover the whole back with packing tape before you start and wear safety glasses.

Removal

  1. Power off and remove the bottom screws

Back up and power the phone off. Remove the two pentalobe screws on either side of the USB-C port. If the glass is cracked, cover it with packing tape first so it doesn’t flake and the suction cup can grip.

  2. Soften the adhesive

Warm the edges of the back glass evenly for 2–3 minutes. The glass should feel hot but still comfortable to hold.

  3. Cut the back glass adhesive

Lift near the bottom edge with a suction cup just enough for a hairline gap, slide a pick in and cut up both long sides, stopping at the antenna lines. Slide the glass a millimeter or two toward the bottom to release the top clips, then cut across the top, staying clear of the speaker grille.

Don’t lift the bottom edge more than about 5°; the cables there are short.

Cut both long sides first, then slide the glass down slightly and cut the top.
  4. Open the back glass like a book

The back glass stays attached by a cable along one long edge, and that edge acts as the hinge. Lift the free edge and open it like a book. Support it so the cable isn’t holding its weight, and cover the camera lenses to keep dust off.

  5. Disconnect the battery first

Remove the 2 tri-point screws from the lower logic board cover and lift it off. Unplug the battery cable first, then the back glass cable.

  6. Remove the old back glass

Set the old glass aside. If shards fell inside, wear safety glasses and cut-resistant gloves, pick them out with tweezers and wipe the frame edge with alcohol.

Reassembly

  1. Clean the frame

Lift the old adhesive off the frame and wipe the edge with isopropyl alcohol. Don’t touch the camera lenses.

  2. Lay down the new adhesive

Peel the films from the new back glass, line up the new adhesive, pull the bottom liner while pressing it down and run a spudger around the edge.

  3. Connect the new back glass

Hold the new glass beside the phone in its open position. Connect the back glass cable first, then the battery cable, and refit the covers and their screws.

  4. Close and press

Peel the remaining liners, check the magnets for stray screws, close the glass, press the edges until flush and clamp it for several minutes. Reinstall the bottom screws.

  5. Test wireless charging

Test MagSafe or wireless charging, the flashlight and all rear cameras.
