iPhone 17 Pro Max Battery Replacement

On the iPhone 17 Pro Max the battery comes out through the front: the screen opens first, and the battery sits in a metal plate held by screws instead of glue. That makes it cleaner than older iPhones, but you need a Torx Plus 4IP driver.

Tools

  • Pentalobe screwdriver P2
  • Phillips screwdriver #000
  • Torx Plus 4IP screwdriver 4IP (battery plate screws)
  • Heat pad, iOpener or heat gun on low
  • Suction cup and thin plastic opening picks
  • Nylon spudger and ESD-safe tweezers
  • Isopropyl alcohol (90%+) and lint-free wipes
  • Clamps or a screen press
  • Safety glasses, and a metal can of sand for the old battery

Parts

  • iPhone 17 Pro Max replacement battery
  • Pre-cut display adhesive
Before you start: run the battery down below 25%. Less charge means much less stored energy if the cell is damaged. If the battery is swollen, dented or punctured at any point, stop and bring the phone to a shop.

Open the screen

  1. Power off and remove the bottom screws

Back up and power the phone off. Remove the two pentalobe screws on either side of the USB-C port. If the glass is cracked, cover it with packing tape first so it doesn’t flake and the suction cup can grip.

  2. Soften the adhesive

Warm the edges of the screen evenly for 2–3 minutes. The glass should feel hot but still comfortable to hold.

  3. Cut the sides, then the top

Lift near the bottom edge with a suction cup and cut along the left and right sides, stopping at the antenna lines. Use a fresh, sharp pick or blade.

Pull the display slightly toward the bottom of the phone to unhook the clips along the top, then cut across the top and around the corners. Hold the display only by its edges and don’t press on the back of the panel.

Cut both long sides first, then slide the screen down slightly and cut the top.
  4. Open the display like a book

The display stays attached by short cables along one long edge, and that edge acts as the hinge. Lift the free edge and open it like a book. Open it and support it so the cables aren’t holding its weight.

  5. Disconnect the battery, then the display

On this model the battery connector is on the screen side. Remove the 2 Phillips screws, one from the battery connector cover and one from the display connector cover, and lift both covers off. Unplug the battery cable first, then the display and light sensor cables.

  6. Set the display aside

Lift the display away and lay it face down on a clean, soft surface.

Remove the battery

  1. Unscrew the battery plate

The iPhone 17 Pro Max battery sits in a metal plate held by 15 Torx Plus 4IP screws. Remove them all and keep them in order; they aren’t all the same.

  2. Lift the battery out

Lift the battery and plate out of the frame. There are no adhesive strips to pull on this model. Put the old battery straight into a metal can of sand.

Install and close

  1. Seat the new battery

Check the frame for loose screws or debris, which can puncture the new cell. Hold the top-right corner of the new battery as you lower it into place.

  2. Reinstall the plate screws

Start every screw by hand first, then tighten them gradually in a cross pattern so the plate seats evenly. Apple tightens these to set torque values in a set order; snug is enough, so don’t force them.

  3. Reconnect and close

Reconnect the display and light sensor cables, then the battery cable last. Refit both covers, lay fresh display adhesive, close and clamp the screen, and reinstall the bottom screws.

  4. Test and finish

Charge for a few minutes before powering on. An aftermarket battery shows as an unknown part under Settings › General › About › Parts & Service History; that’s expected. With a genuine Apple battery, run Repair Assistant from that menu.
