  • Pentalobe screwdriver P2
  • Tri-point screwdriver Y000
  • Phillips screwdriver #000
  • Heat pad, iOpener or heat gun on low
  • Suction cup and thin plastic opening picks
  • Blunt tweezers (for the adhesive strips)

Parts

  • iPhone 15 Pro Max replacement battery (adhesive included)
Before you start: run the battery down below 25%. Less charge means much less stored energy if the cell is damaged. If the battery is swollen, dented or punctured at any point, stop and bring the phone to a shop.

Open the screen

  1. Power off and remove the bottom screws

Back up and power the phone off. Remove the two P2 pentalobe screws on either side of the USB-C port. Tape over cracked glass first so it doesn’t flake and the suction cup can grip.

  2. Soften the adhesive

Warm the edges of the screen evenly for 2–3 minutes. The glass should feel hot but still comfortable to hold.

  3. Cut the adhesive around the sides and top

Lift near the bottom edge with a suction cup, slide a pick in and cut up both long sides, stopping at the antenna lines. Keep the pick shallow so you don’t catch the cables or Face ID parts.

Slide the display a millimeter or two toward the bottom of the phone to release the top clips, then cut across the top. Don’t lift the bottom edge more than about 5°.

Cut both long sides first, then slide the screen down slightly and cut the top.
  4. Open the display like a book

The display stays attached by short cables along one long edge, and that edge acts as the hinge. Lift the free edge and open it like a book. Support it so the cables aren’t holding its weight.

  5. Disconnect the battery, then the display

Remove the 6 tri-point screws from the logic board cover. Tilt the cover up, making sure its tab clears the display cable, then slide it out from under the light sensor cable without tearing that cable.

Unplug the battery cable first, then the display and light sensor cables.

  6. Set the display aside

Lift the display away and lay it face down on a clean, soft surface.

Remove the battery

  1. Remove the bottom speaker

Remove the 4 Phillips screws from the bottom speaker. Lift it slightly with tweezers by a screw hole, separate the thin battery shim from the top of the speaker with a spudger, and lift the speaker out.

  2. Remove the Taptic Engine

Remove the 2 Phillips screws from the Taptic Engine and the 1 tri-point screw from its grounding spring; lift the spring out and keep it (replace it if it’s bent). Remove the 1 screw, unplug the Taptic Engine cable and lift out the Taptic Engine with its battery shim.

  3. Pull the two bottom adhesive strips

Hold the phone down. Peel one bottom tab fully off the battery before you start twisting, wrap it around blunt tweezers until white adhesive shows, then keep the tweezers low and pull toward the bottom of the phone, twisting as you go, until the strip slides out. Repeat with the other bottom strip.

Keep the tweezers low and parallel to the battery. Strip positions simplified.
  4. Pull the top strip

Turn the phone around. Peel the top tab off the battery and wrap it around the tweezers, then pull slowly at a low angle along the channel between the battery and the camera, toward the top speaker. Don’t pull it straight up and don’t touch the Face ID camera.

  5. Lift the battery out

If a strip broke and you can’t reach it, slide the flat end of a spudger only under a spot where a strip already came out and lift gently; never pry where adhesive is still attached. If all three strips broke, stop and bring it to a shop. Put the old battery in a metal can of sand.

Install and close

  1. Clean the bay and seat the new battery

Wipe leftover adhesive from the bay with alcohol, avoiding the thin plastic film. Check for loose screws. Apply the new battery’s adhesive, line it up and press it down firmly across the whole cell.

  2. Rebuild and close

Reinstall the Taptic Engine and its grounding spring and the bottom speaker. Reconnect the display and light sensor cables, then the battery cable last, and refit the logic board cover. Lay fresh display adhesive, close and clamp the screen, and reinstall the bottom screws.

  3. Test and finish

Charge for a few minutes before powering on. An aftermarket battery shows as an unknown part under Settings › General › About › Parts & Service History; that’s expected.
