Before you start: run the battery down below 25%. Less charge means much less stored energy if the cell is damaged. If the battery is swollen, dented or punctured at any point, stop and bring the phone to a shop.

Open the back

  1. Power off and remove the bottom screws

Back up and power the phone off. Remove the two P2 pentalobe screws on either side of the Lightning port. Tape over cracked glass first so it doesn’t flake and the suction cup can grip.

  2. Soften the adhesive

Warm the edges of the back glass evenly for 2–3 minutes. The glass should feel hot but still comfortable to hold.

  3. Cut the back glass adhesive

Lift near the bottom edge with a suction cup and cut along both long sides and the top until the glass is free. Slide it slightly toward the bottom to release the top clips. Don’t lift the bottom edge more than about 5°.

slide 1–2 mm bottom: lift 5° max, no cutting here Cut path Keep picks awayfrom the camera
Cut both long sides first, then slide the glass down slightly and cut the top.
  4. Open the back glass like a book

The back glass stays attached by a cable along one long edge, and that edge acts as the hinge. Lift the free edge and support the glass. Cover the camera lenses to keep dust off.

  5. Disconnect the battery first

Remove the 1 tri-point screw from the upper cover and the 2 tri-point screws from the lower cover. Tilt up the lower cover and slide it out toward the Taptic Engine, then tilt up the upper cover and slide it out toward the camera.

Unplug the battery cable first, then the back glass cable. Some phones have a white adhesive pad under the battery cable; don’t lift the cable off that pad here, only unplug its end.

Remove the battery

  1. Remove the rear camera

Wear gloves and don’t touch the lenses. Remove the 3 Phillips screws from the camera cover and unplug the two camera cables (and the mmWave antenna cable, if your phone has one). Loosen the adhesive under the lower camera cable with a spudger, tilt the top of the camera up and lift it out.

  2. Check for the white pad

Some phones have a white adhesive pad under the battery cable. If yours does, gently lift the cable off the pad, then remove the pad and throw it away.

  3. Pull the two adhesive strips

Start with the top-right tab: peel it off the battery with blunt tweezers, wrap it around them until white adhesive shows, then keep the tweezers low and pull toward the top of the phone, twisting as you go. Repeat with the top-left strip.

  4. If a strip snaps

Grab a visible broken end and keep twisting. Otherwise slide a spudger only under a spot where a strip already came out and lift the battery just enough to grip it. Don’t lever against the edge of the frame. If both strips broke, stop and bring it to a shop.

  5. Lift the battery out

Lift the battery out and put it straight into a metal can of sand.

Install and close

  1. Seat the new battery

Clean the bay with alcohol, check for loose screws, apply the new battery’s adhesive and press it down firmly across the whole cell.

  2. Reinstall the camera and close

Refit the rear camera and its cover. Connect the back glass cable first, then the battery cable, refit both covers, lay fresh back glass adhesive, close and clamp the glass, and reinstall the bottom screws.

  3. Test and finish

Charge for a few minutes before powering on, then check the cameras. An aftermarket battery shows as an unknown part under Settings › General › About › Parts & Service History; that’s expected.
