Tools

  • Model-specific display-opening tools and fresh adhesive
  • Microscope, board holder, temperature-controlled rework and soldering equipment
  • Suitable flux, solder, wick, ESD protection and fume extraction
  • Multimeter and known-good charging/data cable
  • Exact-model port flex; variant and color must match the removed part

Parts and supplies

Confirm the replacement part and the source's complete supply list for your exact model and Wi-Fi or cellular variant before starting.

Display adhesive is normally replaced after opening. Follow the source's requirements for screws, tape, foam and calibration.

Before you begin

Confirm the model in Settings → General → About and match the screen size and Wi-Fi or cellular version. A similar-looking iPad can have different cables, screws and replacement parts.

Battery and glass precautions

Back up your data and disconnect all accessories. Follow the selected source's discharge and power-isolation instructions before opening. A swollen, dented, punctured or unusually hot battery needs specialist handling; do not heat, bend or pry it. Protect your eyes from broken glass. Power down before adjusting an internal connection.

Repair sequence

Professional microsoldering procedure. The port flex is soldered to the logic board. Opening tools alone are insufficient. Watch the demonstration before starting; there is no universal safe heat setting for every board and soldering station.

  1. Confirm the fault

Check the Lightning connection with a known-good cable and adapter. With power off, inspect for broken pins, a loose housing or a damaged flex. Corrosion or an intact port with no charging calls for board diagnosis.

  2. Open and isolate

Follow the exact-model illustrated display-access procedure. Support the display, isolate power using its prescribed method, and record every shield, fastener and flex position. Preserve the original biometric components.

  3. Access the soldered connection

Disconnect the cables and release the fasteners and adhesive needed to remove the logic board/port assembly. Use the model-specific demonstration for the board layout. Support the board without bending it and keep the battery away from rework heat.

  4. Remove the failed flex

Under magnification, protect adjacent components and apply flux to the joint. Use controlled rework to release the soldered flex without pulling pads off the board. Stop if the joint has not released; mechanical force is not a substitute for molten solder.

  5. Inspect and solder the replacement

Clean and inspect the pads for damage. Align the exact replacement flex, solder the joints and inspect for bridges or missing connections. Damaged pads need a separate board-repair procedure; do not guess jumper locations.

  6. Check before applying power

Check for unintended shorts and continuity through the repaired connection. Clean away flux using a method appropriate to the materials, allow solvent to evaporate, and inspect again under magnification.

  7. Reassemble and verify

Reinstall the original board, port screws, grounds, cable routing and shields. Reconnect the display in the documented order and test charging/data. Power down before reopening or resealing; fit fresh display adhesive and perform the final checklist.
